Last year I finally got fed up with paying extortion prices to Gillette. I tried an electric razor for about a month and that sucked (Braun). So next step I decided to try wet shaving. Purchased this razor, some blades, a cheap badger brush, and some shaving cream (Taylor of Old Bond Street).
Everything has worked out great. I have a giant beard that grows quickly. I often skip a week or so of shaving and have no problem cutting it down with this setup (cuts through the beard without pulling). Best shave I've every gotten and I wish I'd started this sooner.
I was a bit apprehensive about purchasing all this stuff, but it has worked out great. Took about a week of shaving to get adjusted, and after that not much of a problem. Just take it slow and check out some of the sites online dedicated to wet shaving for tips.
If you're contemplating make the jump, do it! You will save money in the long run at the expense of about 5 minutes per shave.
I have dropped this razor without issue. I have used it exclusively since November 2009. I can only compare it to the cartridge razors I used before. This has a much heavier feel. I cannot compare to other safety razors though. This is the only one I've owned, and may be the only one I'll ever need.
Only problem I have ever had was the occasional clog. Crank the water up or unscrew the bottom 1 turn and it's gone. This is probably not normal though. As I said earlier I sometimes skip a week or two of shaving and my nick name in high school was Teen Wolf.

It came time to "invest" in new blades for my electric razor that "shaves as close as a blade" again, and I decided to go back to the Gillete safety razor made in the 1950's my father had abandoned years ago. I liked the results, and the cheap blades, so much better than the electric that I went out and bought this one. It's a solid peice of simplicity, and didn't take long to get used to. The Merkur blade was nice, but I switched it out for Derby's. Don't. Go looking for "Shark" blades. You can get them in lots of 100 cheap, and they're just as good as the Merkur one. They're Indian made instead of German, though, if that means anything to you.

I've been using Wilkinson razors since 1967 and only stopped when I broke my old safety razor.
Found the very nice Parker butterfly on Amazon and bought this size pack for the price and to have enough on hand (Can't be found locally.)
These blades rate alongside of their competitor blade in giving a close, smooth shave without the burn and redness that the new multi-blade razors tend to leave.
And the price is much, much lower. I have a course, heavy beard and I can get about 5 or 6 shaves per blade.
I only get about three or four with the top of the line multi-blade.
If you're considering a switch, it may take a few weeks to adjust but I think you'll find it worth the effort.
Okay, I'm old school and I don't like shaving with a razor that looks like it could beam Spock aboard, but the bottom line is comfort and price and less to go into the land fill.

I just switched from cartridge to safety razors a month ago. I got my dad's classic safety razor and ordered this pack of blades. I have been enjoying trying out the different blades to see which ones work best for me. So far I think I like the Astra Platinum the best. Buying the variety pack was the recommendation in the reviews of one of the other single-brand blade packs, and it made sense. I'm really glad I bought this pack.
